A security issue affects these releases of Ubuntu and its derivatives:

  • Ubuntu 15.10
  • Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
  • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Summary

Git could be made to crash or run programs as your login if it received changes from a specially crafted remote repository.

Details

Laƫl Cellier discovered that Git incorrectly handled path strings in
crafted Git repositories. A remote attacker could use this issue to cause
a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code with the
privileges of the user invoking Git. (CVE-2016-2315, CVE-2016-2324)

Update instructions

The problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following package version:

Ubuntu 15.10:
git 1:2.5.0-1ubuntu0.2
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS:
git 1:1.9.1-1ubuntu0.3
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS:
git 1:1.7.9.5-1ubuntu0.3
